The National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) and ExxonMobil Foundation announced on May 17, 2001 the funding of a state-based education initiative to link Wisconsin teachers and education organizations in a nationwide science learning community. The project, Building a Presence for Science, created the Wisconsin Science Network.

The Wisconsin Science Network, a coalition of education associations, agencies, and businesses, identified a cadre of educators to serve as Key Leaders in the state who, in turn, established a network of Points of Contact in Wisconsin's public and private schools. Representatives of the coaltion serve as the Wisconsin Science Network Board of Directors.

The National Science Teachers Association, founded in 1944, is the world's largest professional organization dedicated to promoting excellence and innovation in science teaching and learning for all. NSTA's 55,000 plus members include science teachers, science supervisors, administrators, scientists, business and industry representatives and others involved in science education. Building a Presence for Science, started by NSTA in 1996 and is now active in most states. For more information visit http://www.nsta.org/bap/
