Rhulene Artis

Recently retired from Milwaukee Public Schools (MPS), Rhulene Artis spent her first seven years in MPS teaching elementary level classrooms, three years as the District Science Model Teacher, and then as the MPS District-wide Elem. Level Science Demonstration Teacher. Rhulene became the Assistant Director of the NSF funded Milwaukee Urban Systemic Initiative in Science and Mathematics (MUSI) in 1996 and continued as Assistant Director and later Director until her retirement. In this role she worked along with other leaders developing and implementing strategies designed to help meet the objectives of raising student achievement in science and mathematics and closing the achievement gaps among groups of students. Responsibilities of serving in this role, and then in the role of MUSI Project Director, included supervising support teachers, providing professional development for teachers, curriculum and assessment writing, formulating and maintaining partnerships with colleges/universities, business and nonprofit organizations that support science and mathematics education, collaborating and planning with parents and tutors, and planning along with school staffs and district-level staff. She continues to support science and mathematics education while working with on a number of local, state and national committees for science and mathematics education including National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) Committee on Coordination and Supervision, WestEd Cohort III Fellows, and the Wisconsin Science Network Board of Directors.
